Sugar-glazed deathburgers at the Abergavenny Food Festival
I get all sorts of strange promotions and 'press releases', but this may take the (beef-stuffed) cake. Reprinted in its entirety after the jump [with comments]:
Today, architectural foodsmiths, Bompas & Parr unveils the menu for the Monnow Valley Drive Thru, a pop-up restaurant created for the Abergavenny Food Festival Fringe. A sugar glazed donut burger will headline the main menu while breakfast diners can enjoy bacon buttes made with donuts instead of buns.
The Drive Thru will launch on the 20th September serving quality fast food and a slice of Americana overlooking one of the Britain’s most idyllic valleys. Signage and structural interventions will transform the Monnow Valley Arts Centre into a top end drive thru. Leading architect CZWG has designed the world’s most exclusive burger cases, a hypnotic box and a funky cow box, following an in-house competition. The unusual packaging and unexpected structures will heighten the eating experience. [I like the idea of a 'hypnotic' box... you WILL like this burger. It was better than 'Cats'...]
The burger, known as the Monnow Valley Burger is comprised of a hamburger patty with two slices of melted cheese, tomatoes, secret sauce and onions sandwiched inside a Krispy Kreme Original Glazed donut and garnished with a slice of gherkin. The Monnow Valley Burger contains up to 1000 calories and 45 grams of fat. [I think they should deep-fry the gherkin, and go for 1200]
Visitors to the Monnow Valley Drive Thru will also be able to enjoy the spectacle of the Flock of Burgers; a burger-based performance performed at 11am. In the evening there will be a special screening of Pulp Fiction at the drive-in movie theatre. Visitors that are still hungry are invited to compete in Bompas & Parr’s hot dog eating championship.
Harry Parr of Bompas & Parr commented "With this recipe I wanted to make each mouthful taste like the total American experience. In the USA it is relatively common to have savoury and sweet tastes combined on a single plate. The Monnow Valley Burger combines the two in a single bite! Interestingly, dishes that are both savoury and sweet were popular in this country in the medieval period so a sugary burger has strong historical precedent." [That's Old Europe for you - in the USA, we'd bread the whole thing in cake crumbs, deep fry it, roll it in cheese powder and then serve it on a stick]
The Monnow Valley Drive Thru will be held on Saturday 20 September as part of the Abergavenny Food Festival. Quality drive thru menu served from 8am
At 11 am the Prance of the Burgers will be performed by Gwent Young People’s Theatre who will be dressed as a flock of burgers. [Wow]
Pulp Fiction will be screened at the drive-in movie theatre at 19:30pm. Limited drive-in spaces available. Arrive early to watch the movie from your car. Hay bale seating available for all.
Hot dog eating championship during the interval at 21:00pm. Cheer for your favourite eater or chow down yourself!
Tickets for the film screening and hot dog eating championship available from www.jellymongers.co.uk .
1. Abergavenny Food Festival www.abergavennyfoodfestival.com
Each year visitors from near and far descend on Abergavenny to enjoy the treats of a wonderful foodie weekend. This year, to celebrate the 10th anniversary, there’s an exciting and diverse Fringe programme featuring over fifty food-themed events from local businesses, including shops, restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions. The Fringe kicks off in the weeks running up to the festival - and continues over the weekend itself. These events complement the core programme of masterclasses, tutored tastings and talks.
2. Bompas and Parr www.jellymongers.co.uk
Bompas and Parr curates spectacular culinary events, creates fine English jellies and designs bespoke jelly moulds. Their work operates in the space between food and architecture. Projects explore how the taste of food is influenced by synaesthesia, performance and setting. Jelly is currently the focus of research: jelly is the perfect site for an examination of food and architecture due to its uniquely plastic form and the historic role it has played in exploring notions of taste.

Whatever the scale CZWG’s aim is always to combine practicality with delight.

Ack! Two American food instuitutions (burgers and donuts) do not become more American when combined! It's like serving battered cod between slices of sticky toffee pudding!
